Obverse: Seated Commerce facing left, with date below, and the slogan TRADE & NAVIGATION around. As the economy of Nova Scotia was based on trade and navigation, this slogan was very popular in that area.
Reverse: Denomination in centre, with PURE COPPER PREFERABLE TO PAPER around. This inscription indicates a mistrust of paper money. A large portion of the population of Nova Scotia consisted of British Loyalists who emigrated from the United States, who recalled the collapse of various issues of paper money in the former colonies prior to 1783.
