Description

1839 Drapery USA Half Dollar Extra Fine (EF-40)

The Seated Liberty half dollar was a silver coin issued by the United States from 1839 to 1891. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin s obverse features Lady Liberty seated on a rock, holding a shield in one hand and a staff with a liberty cap in the other, symbolizing freedom and vigilance. The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, representing peace and military readiness. Over its 52-year mintage, the Seated Liberty half dollar underwent several design modifications, including the addition of rays and arrows around the date during the Civil War era to adjust for silver content. This coin reflects the history and challenges of the 19th century, making it a cherished piece among collectors for its elegance and historical significance.

Obverse: Seated Liberty looking over her shoulder, with a cap on a stick in her left hand and a shield in her right, drapery under the elbow on the right side, with thirteen stars around, representing the original thirteen states of the Union, and date below.
Reverse: An American bald eagle with wings spread, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its claws, with legend around, and denomination below.
